Padilla and Gabuat share top PPS Dipolog honors

Mom. Ozamiz City’s Judyann Padilla and Sibugay’s Thomas Gabuat each picked up a pair of straight wins to top the PPS-PEPP National Age Group Tennis Tournament at the RGS courts in Zamboanga del Norte on Thursday.

But as Padilla had to get past a tough AJ Acabo twice, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3, in the 18 and 16-and-under finals, respectively, Gabuat crossed a pair of le shutout wins over Axel Apat and Mark Barrios to equal the former’s two title feat in the Group 2 tournament hosted under the auspices of Unified Tennis Philippines and UTR (Universal Tennis Rating).

Other winners of the four-day tournament, which was part of the national circuit set up by Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala President and CEO Bobby Castro, were Marlyn Mesiona of Sindangan, Josh Lim of Lanao del Norte , Alexis Acido of Polanco, local bet Pete Bandala and Sherwin Gom-os of Liloy.

Top seed Mesiona crushed Ellen Ramos, 6-1, 6-0, while unseeded Lim toppled No. 1 Bandala, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch the 14-U crowns; Alexis Acido exhausted Gabrielle Bulado, 7-5, 7-5, while Bandala routed Rashdi Macaundas, 6-1, 6-1, to split the honors in the 12-U game; and No. 2 Gom-os held off Vanizer Acabo, 4-2, 4-1, for the unisex Plum 10 in the event presented by Dunlop.

Meanwhile, the action is heating up in the nation’s oldest age group, the pool of talent that could be tapped and developed into future national pool and team members, with the next step which will take place this weekend on the courts of Sindangan, also in Zambo del Norte.

Then, the Labason stage from April 25 to 27, also in Zambo del Norte, followed by the Liloy stage from April 28 to 30. The circuit moves to Lanao del Norte in Maranding from May 1-3 and then to Oroquieta City from May 4-6.
