The event ends at Wright Cuney Park with a picnic.
The connection from Galveston to Juneteenth
juinteenth was born in the historic seaside town on June 19, 1865, when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No.3 in Galveston, which proclaimed the freedom of over 250,000 enslaved blacks in the state of Texas, one of the last groups of slaves to be freed in the United States.
The city is also home to Texas’ first historically black high school and public library, is the hometown of world heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, and is home to several historically black churches that were established as the first for Texas.
